NARC G1 Garlic is a new garlic variety developed by Dr. Humayun Akhtar Sahib after 4 to 5 years of research at the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in Islamabad. Known for its strong growth, resistance to diseases, and excellent flavor, this garlic variety is becoming a favorite among farmers in Pakistan. NARC G1 Garlic is well-suited to different climates and offers higher yields compared to traditional garlic varieties.
Cultivation Time for NARC G1 Garlic
- Optimal Planting Period: September 20 to October 10.
- For Cooler Temperatures (Less than 30Ā°C): Begin planting from September 20.
- For Warmer Temperatures (More than 30Ā°C): Wait until the temperature drops slightly.
- Best Time in Punjab: October 1.
- Harvest Time: Early October (October 1 to October 15) for maximum yields.
Seed Selection
To ensure healthy and large garlic bulbs, use medium to large-sized cloves for planting. Healthy seeds lead to better bulb formation.
Land Preparation
Soil Type: Use fertile, well-drained soil and avoid waterlogged areas.
Preparation Steps:
- Apply 5-7 wheelbarrows of dung.
- Plow the soil and water it to encourage seed germination.
- Mix the following fertilizers per acre:
- 1 bag of DAP
- 10 kg of potash
- 3 kg of boron
- 3 kg of zinc
Cultivation Methods
- Beds: A modern method that reduces costs and improves yields. Ensure a spacing of 6-8 inches between garlic plants.
- Kheeli (Planting): This method is good for bulb size but may reduce the number of plants.
- Flat Land: A traditional method, less efficient due to waterlogging issues and higher costs.
Irrigation
Water immediately after planting and then every 10-15 days. Avoid overwatering to prevent fungal problems.
Weed Control
Spray Method:
- Use Pendi Mathalin (800 ml) for broadleaf weeds.
- Use Dual Gold (400 ml) for grasses.
- For larger weeds, use HADAF (500 ml) mixed with 100 liters of water.
Mulching:
- Apply rice straw to control weeds and retain soil moisture.
Fertilization
- Initial: Apply balanced fertilizers before planting.
- Growth Stage: Use nitrogen-rich fertilizers early, then switch to phosphorus and potassium for bulb development.
- Post-planting: Apply ammonium sulfate, Nitrophos (NP), and humic acid as the crop matures.
Pest and Disease Management
Pests:
- Thrips: Control with Radiant (60 ml/acre), Abamectin (500 ml/acre), or Chlorfenapyr (200 ml/acre).
Diseases:
- Leaf Blight, Downy Mildew, Purple Burns: Use fungicides like Azoxystrobin + Difenconazole (250 grams/acre).
- Stem and Bulb Rot: Avoid overwatering and high humidity.
- Powdery Mildew: Use fungicides like Azoxystrobin + Copper Oxychloride (200 grams/acre).
Harvesting and Storage
- Harvesting: Harvest from late April to mid-May. Stop irrigation 10-15 days before harvesting. Cure garlic in a shady, ventilated area.
- Storage: Store garlic in a well-ventilated place. Use Delta Methrin (150 ml/tank) for pest control and hang garlic to ensure proper drying.
Other Garlic Varieties
- Desi Garlic: Yields 80-90 mun per acre.
- Chinese Varieties: Yields 130-150 mun per acre.
